Wales & West Utilities (WWU) will partner with major government and energy players to deliver Powering Wales Renewably, a project to increase renewable generation connections across the nation.

The project will create a connected digital twin of Wales’s energy transmission and distribution network. This will incorporate data sets and digital technologies to create a unique common interface, accelerating the integration of renewable generation and ensuring better coordination across the whole energy network.

Wales & West Utilities will provide critical information on the gas distribution network across Wales, showing network location alongside capacity, large connections and offering insight on future generation of low carbon gases that can be used in the gas network.

The project brings together key stakeholders in the Welsh energy system, using innovative technology to identify the priorities and address the challenges of delivering a net zero energy system. WWU will partner with NESO, CGI, the Welsh Government, National Grid Electricity Distribution, National Grid Electricity Transmission, National Gas Transmission, SP Energy Networks and CENIN Renewables.

Matt Hindle, Head of Net Zero & Sustainability at Wales & West Utilities, said:

Clear visibility and understanding of the whole energy system is key to delivering effective and efficient decisions around Wales’ future energy system. We’re excited to play our role in Powering Wales Renewably, which will support network operators, local and national planning and asset owners to coordinate.

These improvements could help connect more renewables over fossil fuel generators, which could also deliver savings on consumer bills and an estimated 2 million tonne saving in CO2 emissions. As well as meeting our ambitious net zero targets, we’ll be helping facilitate a fairer energy transition and greater investment for communities across Wales.

Powering Wales Renewably recently received Beta phase funding from Ofgem and Innovate UK’s Strategic Innovation Fund to better facilitate decarbonisation in Wales. This project is funded through the Strategic Innovation Fund, an Ofgem programme managed in partnership with Innovate UK.
