Next phase of essential gas upgrade project to start in Okehampton

Posted: 27/10/2025

Wales & West Utilities is progressing well with its £305,000 project to upgrade gas pipes in the Exeter Road area of Okehampton.

The work is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area, helping to keep people warm for decades to come.

The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Devon County Council to plan the work, and it has been agreed that, as part of the next phase of the project, the following traffic management will be in place:

  • A road closure on the road from Greenslade Bridge to Newland Cross, B3215 (3 – 28 November)
  • A road closure on Lopes Crescent (10 – 21 November)
  • Road closures on Victoria Street and Wonnocotts Road (17 November – 22 December)
  • Multi-way traffic lights on the junction of Wonnocotts Road and Crediton Road (17 – 28 November)
  • Further traffic management will follow in January 2026

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this work and said:

“We are making good progress and continue to work with the Council to plan these essential works.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”

Wales & West Utilities is the gas emergency and pipeline service, delivering energy to over 7.5 million people across Wales and the south west of England. We don’t sell gas; we transport it through an extensive underground network of more than 35,000 kilometres of pipes.
