The government requires energy suppliers – the company you pay your gas and electric bills to, to offer Smart Meters to their customers by the end of 2020. However – you don’t have to have one.
Here are some frequently asked questions about the Smart Meter roll-out and the part we play.
-
What is your role in the Smart Meter roll-out?
We’re working hard to support the roll-out of smart gas meters across Wales and the south west of England. But we can’t arrange for you to have one – that’s your supplier’s responsibility. Any queries about smart meters should be directed to your energy supplier.
Remember, we are the gas emergency service. If at any time you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, you can call the gas emergency number 0800 111 999 at any time, day or night, 365 days a year. The call is free. Just pick up the phone, dial the number and you will be put through to a trained operator who will take all the details.

What do I do if I want a Smart Meter?
Contact your energy supplier.
-
How do I find out who my energy supplier is?
Take a look at your energy bills – it’s the company you pay money to. Alternatively, you can find out who your energy supplier is by calling 0870 608 1524.
-
I want to move my Smart Meter
We can alter your gas supply pipe and move your meter – but this may result in the wireless connectivity of the meter being lost. If this happens your supplier may need to visit to re-establish the connectivity – and this may cost you. If you want us to alter your gas supply and you have a Smart Meter – you should contact your supplier to discuss your plans with them too.
