Wales & West Utilities is due to start work to upgrade gas pipes in the St Helens Road area of Swansea which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.

The £54,500 investment work, which starts on 5 January, involves upgrading over 300 metres of old metal pipes to new plastic ones and will take 10 weeks to complete. It will also involve upgrading individual supply pipes to 50 homes and businesses in the area.

Ahead of the scheme Wales & West Utilities has been working with Swansea City Council to plan the work alongside other investment schemes taking place across the city. As part of the work a traffic management plan has been agreed and will involve traffic lights and a lane closure outbound from Swansea on St Helens Road between Richardson Street and Beach Street. Roads that join St Helens Road along the route will need to follow the clearly marked diversion route.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for the area, Francis Kirk, is managing the work and said:

“Our work in Swansea is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We have worked closely with Swansea City Council to plan the best way to complete our work while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“Working in areas like this is never easy but we will work as safely and as quickly as possible to make sure that we get the job done with minimal disruption for local people.”
