Wales & West Utilities is thanking Street residents for their patience as the company says goodbye to the town for at least 80 years after completing £1.4m gas pipe investment work.
The company has been busy working in the Brooks Road area of the town to upgrade more than 8 kilometres of old metal pipes to new plastic ones. With a lifespan of more than 80 years, the upgraded pipes will make sure that local homes and businesses in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
During the £1.4 million scheme, Wales & West Utilities worked closely with Somerset County Council, Brookside Community Primary School and Avalon Special School so the essential work could be done with as little disruption to the community. Wales & West Utilities accommodated the local schools needs and carried out as much work as possible in school holidays to minimise disruption.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Somerset, Barry Sale, said:
“We want to thank everyone who lives, works and travels through Street for bearing with us while we carried out this essential work.
“Working in areas like this is never easy but by working with the local council and schools we were able minimise the disruption to local people.
“Now that we have upgraded the old pipes to new plastic ones, barring any unforeseen emergencies, we shouldn’t need to return to this area of the town for at least 80 years.”
Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service, brings energy to 7.5m people across the south west of England and Wales. This project forms part of our multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002.
