Wales & West Utilities is bidding farewell to areas of Somerset after completing essential gas works on time.
Wales & West Utilities, which has been working in the Shepton Mallet and Langport areas of the county, has finished work which is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are safe and warm for generations to come work.
The £870,000 scheme in Shepton Mallet began in July last year and involved working in the Mason Way area of the town on the scheme, whilst the gas pipe upgrade work on Hermitage Road in Upton, Langport took just a month to complete.
The work has seen Wales & West Utilities upgrade nearly 5.5 kilometres of old metal gas pipe with new longer-lasting ones.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for the area, Barry Sale, managed the work and said:
“We’re delighted to have finished these upgrade schemes and want to thank everyone who lives and works in Somerset for bearing with us while we worked hard to complete this essential work.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Somerset and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”
Wales & West Utilities is carrying out other gas pipe upgrade works across the county, including a scheme in the Langport Road area of Langport, which is due for completion at the end of the month. The work is part of Wales & West Utilities 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being upgraded to new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years, to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and the gas network is fit for the future.
