Wales & West Utilities has completed its gas pipe upgrade work in the Island Road area of Barry ahead of schedule – and the all-important Christmas week.
The work, which started on 19 November, was supposed to take six weeks to complete but thanks to hardworking engineers it has been finished in just four. The completed work means that local homes and businesses will continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and that people are kept safe and warm for years to come.
Ahead of the scheme Wales & West Utilities worked with Vale of Glamorgan Council, Alun Cairns MP and local traders to make sure that the essential work didn’t affect planned Christmas events in the area.
Alun Cairns MP welcomed the news and said:
“I’ve been working with Wales & West Utilities to ensure the work that they needed to carry out in Barry did not have a negative impact on local High Street traders during one of the busiest times of the year.
“Supporting our excellent independent traders is a priority for me, so I’m grateful for their cooperation to this end. Initially we managed to delay the work commencing so that it did not impact on the High Street’s Christmas Market and lights turn on and now I’m really pleased that, with a week to go until Christmas, they’ve finished the job.”
The project involved work on the Broad Street, High Street, Queen Street and Princess Street junctions of Island Road.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for South Wales, Francis Kirk, managed the work and said:
“We are delighted to have finished the scheme in just four weeks and would like to thank those people and traders that live, shop and travel through the area for their patience whilst it was ongoing.
“This work was essential to keep the gas flowing to heat and power businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.”
