Gas emergency and pipeline service Wales & West Utilities has lent a helping hand to various Quakers Yard community initiatives this Christmas as its ground remediation works on the local former gasworks come to a close.

As part of its commitment to support the communities in which it works, Wales & West Utilities has donated £300 to the local foodbank whilst a further £300 has been provided to support the local Christmas pantomime, organised by Councillor Richards.

Just last week Wales & West Utilities teamed up with its contractor, Biogenie, and Keep Wales Tidy to carry out a litter pick in Treharris, which saw a team of 28 volunteers collect over 100 bags of litter from along Sustrans route 47 and the Mill Street side of the river.

Further ecological enhancements are planned for the new year when a team will be on site planting 800 trees and shrubs, encouraging the creation of new wildlife habitats.

Wales & West Utilities has been undertaking ground remediation works on the site, just off Mill Street, since July to ensure the former gasworks site remains suitable for continued use by the public. The works, which involved using specialist plant and equipment, was completed earlier this month.

Councillor Gareth Richards expressed his gratitude to Wales & West Utilities and their partners and said:

Locally we all understand the necessity of these works and they have been completed with consideration to the local environment and community.

We have been delighted that Wales & West Utilities, and their contractor partner, have gone further to positively impact the local community and the donations to the foodbank and the local pantomime have been well received.

This time of year can be exceptionally hard so these donations will go some way to ensure Christmas is a little easier for members of our community. On behalf of everyone I’d like to say a big thank you.

Wales & West Utilities Land Management Officer, Alan Smith, commented:

This work was essential, and we are pleased to have completed it in a safe and timely fashion. We are proud to give something back to the communities in which we work and are delighted that the donations will help spread some festive cheer, whilst the environmental improvement work will impact everyone locally for years to come.
