Wales & West Utilities is working to upgrade gas pipes in Exeter.
The gas emergency and pipeline service is carrying out two projects – one in the Queen Street area and the other in Burnthouse Lane. The works are essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Devon County Council to plan both projects.
The work in Queen Street will take place between 4 – 22 April and the work in Burnthouse Lane will be ongoing for eight weeks, starting on 4 April.
It has been agreed that traffic management will be in place, which includes:
- Road closures in Richmond Road and Elm Grove Road, where there will not be any access to New North Road (4 – 22 April)
- This will be followed by four-way traffic lights on Ludwell Lane, Burnthouse Lane, Coronation Road and Rifford Road which will reduce to two-way traffic lights and will be in place as work continues across the area
- Four-way traffic lights on New North Road, Queen Street and Hele Road (4 – 22 April)
Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this work and said:
These works are essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.
While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Exeter. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
