Wales & West Utilities has thrown its weight behind a Torfaen girls rugby team.

The gas emergency and pipeline service has committed to backing Torfaen Arrows u14 girls side for the season in support of its colleague Rhys Morham, who has worked for the company for nearly 20 years, and volunteers as a team coach on a weekly basis.

The team received a £300 donation which allowed them to purchase new kit and the 28-strong side have had a great start to the season.

Rhys, whose daughter Darcy plays for the side, started coaching the team over a year ago. He now coaches the side for their twice weekly training sessions, as well as weekend fixtures. He explains:

Girls Hub rugby is a little different in that Torfaen Arrows are hosted by Pontypool RFC, but are a regional team, with a number of host clubs across the region supporting us. We have a passionate bunch of girls and coaches and are proud to promote female rugby in Wales.

We’re always mindful of passing additional costs onto our families but we know how proud our players are training in weather appropriate gear and playing in matching kit so to have the support from my employer has been fantastic.

This support has really helped take away some financial burden and we’re delighted that this sponsorship has funded training kit.

The girls will now be able to train all year round and will be proud to showcase Wales & West Utilities support. We now hope to do them proud through the remainder of the season.

Wales & West Utilities provided the funding as part of its commitment to support the communities it serves and by way of supporting the volunteer efforts of its colleagues.

Bethan Jones, Head of Human Resources at Wales & West Utilities, said:

Our colleagues go the extra mile to support the communities in which they live, and work, and we are always delighted to support their efforts.

We’re happy to help the team at Torfaen Arrows and hope this donation will help keep the players safe and warm this winter as they play the sport they love.
