Work to upgrade over 1,750 metres of gas pipes in the Bishops Hull Road and Silk Mills Road area of Taunton is set to start at the end of the month, and Wales & West Utilities is inviting members of the local community to hear about the plans.
Members of the local community are invited to the drop-in session which will take place in Robin Close Communal Hall, Bishops Hull, TA1 5EU on 12 March between 2 – 7pm. Here they can view plans and direct any questions to the project team.
Gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, will start the work on 31 March and, barring any engineering difficulties, the project will complete in September. It is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
Wales & West Utilities has liaised with Somerset Council to plan the work and it has been agreed that traffic management, including traffic lights and road closures, will be in operation as the works progress. The initial plans currently include:
Phase one:
- A road closure on Bishops Hull Road (31 March – end June)
- Work will be ongoing on Orchard Drive (21 April – 4 May)
- Road closures on Bishops Hull Road and Comeytrowe Lane, along with 2-way traffic lights on Stonegallows and Wellington New Road (27 May – 13 June)
Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work and said:
We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.
