Wales & West Utilities is carrying out works to upgrade gas pipes in Swindon.

The gas emergency and pipeline service is carrying out two projects – one in the Highworth Road area and the other in Eastcott Road. The works are essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.

The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Swindon Borough Council to plan both projects.

The work in Highworth Road will start on 7 April and, barring any engineering difficulties will finish on 19 May and the work in Eastcott Road will be completed between 7 – 22 April.

It has been agreed that traffic management will be in place, which includes:

  • Two-way and multi-way traffic lights on Highworth Road between 7 April – 2 May
  • A lane closure on Highworth Road between 6 – 19 May
  • A road closure on Eastcott Road, between the junctions of Bath Road and King William Street (7 – 22 April). During this time the car park access will be maintained and access will be via the King William Street end.

Wales & West Utilities Mick Gallavin is managing this work and said:

These works is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
