Wales & West Utilities is progressing its £125,000 gas pipe upgrade scheme in and around the Mumbles Road area of Swansea.

The work, which started in January, is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are kept safe and warm for generations to come.

The work involves upgrading 1.37 kilometres of old metal gas pipes to new longer-lasting plastic ones and the next section of the scheme, which begins today (13 May), involves working in Mayals Road. As part of this it has been agreed with Swansea Council that Mayals Road will be closed inbound towards Swansea from the junction of Mumbles Road for two weeks. A diversion route along Fairwood Road will be clearly signposted.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for the area, Francis Kirk, is managing the work and said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Mumbles and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”
