Cardiff’s Red Dragon softball team has scored a ‘home run’ after receiving funding support from Wales & West Utilities.

The mixed gender team, which plays in the Cardiff softball league, has received money which will be put towards essential equipment to help the 16 players to compete against other local sides this summer.

The donation comes after team member, Frances Phillips, made a request to her employer for their support.

Frances explained:

I joined the club late last year and really enjoy playing during the summer months. I play hockey to a high standard, but that season finishes in May, so this is a great way to keep active, whilst having a lot of fun, between May and August.

The uptake amongst adults in the local area is increasing, which is great, but with that comes with the need for more equipment. I know my employer, Wales & West Utilities, is always keen to support the efforts of its colleagues so I decided to put in a request.

Wales & West Utilities is the gas emergency and pipeline service for Wales and the south west of England and provided the funding as part of its commitment to support the communities it serves.

Frances, who has worked at Wales & West Utilities for seven years, continued:

The league held an open day last month to increase participation and another team has already been formed, taking the total teams competing in the league to 10. We now hope to spread the word further and put Cardiff on the map as a softball hub!

Bethan Jones, Head of Human Resources at Wales & West Utilities, said:

We always look to support our colleagues who do so much within their local communities, outside of work.

It’s great that more people are participating in softball, and we hope this donation will allow the club to grow further. We wish them the best of luck for the season ahead.

The Cardiff Softball league hosts games at Pontcanna Fields every Wednesday during the summer months.
