Wales & West Utilities will shortly begin a project to upgrade part of the gas network in Bovey Tracey.

The gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with Devon County Council to plan the work. The investment work will begin in the Station Road area of the town on 19 August and, barring any engineering difficulties, it will finish during October.

The work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.

It has been agreed that traffic management will be in place as the works progress. This currently includes:

A road closure on Station Road, between the junctions of Brook Close and Monks Way and from Lowerdown Pottery to Fire Station (19 August – 4 October)
Multi-way traffic lights on the junction of Monks Way, Station Road and the road from Lowerdown Pottery to fire station (27 August – 9 September)
In planning the project Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with the organisers of the Bovey Festival and will ensure access to car parks will be available. During the festival, free car parking will be available for visitors in the town centre, in Mill Marsh Park, via St John’s Lane. Access will also be maintained to the car park from Monks Way, and from the car park to the festival by pavement and through Mill Marsh Park itself.

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Bovey Tracey. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
