Wales & West Utilities is to start a £500,000 gas pipe upgrade scheme in Carbis Bay later this month.

The work, which starts on 12 October and will finish in February 2021, is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are safe and warm for generations to come. It involves upgrading 2.4 kilometres of gas pipes along Church Lane, Longstone Hill, Church Road, Church Close and Fairfield Close.

To plan the work and make sure disruption is kept to a minimum Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Cornwall Council. To keep engineers and the local community safe during the work, traffic management will be in place. This will involve:

• A road closure on Church Lane, from its junction with Longstone Hill to the junction Church Road. This will be in place from 12 October – 4 December
• Two-way traffic lights in place on Church Road from 7 December – 26 February ‘21
• Four-way traffic lights in place at junction of Church Road and Station Hill from 15 – 26 February ‘21

We know that working on roads like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll be working as safely and as quickly as possible to make sure the work is completed in a timely fashion, while keeping inconvenience to a minimum for local people and road users.

When our engineers are working in the road, or in local homes and businesses, they will be following clear guidelines to keep themselves and our customers safe. If you are passing our work site, we respectfully ask that you keep a 2m distance.

To power a green recovery from coronavirus, we’ll be working hard to keep the gas flowing safely today and to prepare the gas network to transport green gases, like biomethane and hydrogen, so it can play its part delivering green, sustainable energy in the future.

Barry Sale, Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller

Wales & West Utilities engineers will practice safety measures which include:

  • Before entering customer’s homes, engineers will wash their hands with soap and water
  • While in customer’s homes, they’ll wear face coverings and eye protection, and may ask anyone else in the house to stand in another room while they work
  • While working in the street, they’ll social distance as far as possible, and would urge local people who may be passing to keep 2m away from work sites
