Julie, 24, from Cardiff joined Wales & West Utilities’ graduate scheme in August 2017 after graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
As a graduate engineer working out of the company’s headquarters in Newport, Julie now spends time working across various business disciplines, giving her the opportunity to not only understand how a gas network works but also get to know people from across the organisation that will prove invaluable in developing her career.
Julie explains her motivation for joining Wales & West Utilities:
Working for an organisation like this is fantastic and in the relatively short time I’ve been here I have had lots of opportunities, which I have grabbed with both hands!
The graduate scheme is extremely well organised and provides a great deal of structure. When I first started I went through an induction week, which was great for not only introducing me to other colleagues but for allowing me an insight into the company and its culture. And of course I’ve also had specific training relating to the operation of the gas network too.
All of these opportunities have allowed me to develop all the skills and knowledge that I need to build a career with Wales & West Utilities and in the gas industry.
Julie has advice for anyone thinking of joining the gas industry.
Be open-minded and prepared to learn as much as you can, and ask as many questions as possible!
