Cardiff’s Jamie Swain, 31, works as a Gas Emergency Service Manager, leading 20 engineers who respond to gas emergencies right across the South Wales Valleys.
Jamie explains his career route:
I started working in the gas industry in 2008 as I wanted a job that had a bit of security with opportunity for me to develop and build a career.
I started working as a Gas Emergency Service despatcher – assigning Gas Emergency Engineers to respond to gas leaks and other emergencies, before deciding to apply for Wales & West Utilities apprenticeship programme – and I’ve not looked back!
After completing his apprenticeship in September 2010, Jamie was a Gas Emergency Engineer from 2010 to 2017. And with both back office and operational experience, he took a management role in June 2017.
Jamie has sound advice for anyone looking for a career with Wales & West Utilities:
If you apply yourself, work hard, it will always pay off. Having the support of a company like Wales & West Utilities has benefitted me hugely. The apprentice programme was second to none but there have always been additional opportunities to further my skillset. It really is a fantastic industry to work in!”
