Gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, has been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for its outstanding and exemplary health and safety record.

Wales & West Utilities, which serves 7.5 million people across Wales and the south west of England, has been awarded its fifth gold award in recognition of its industry-leading health and safety performance and commitment.

This year the company has also been awarded a RoSPA Commendation in recognition of its industry-leading practice in health and safety at work within the oil and gas sector.

RoSPA’s mission to save lives and reduce injuries covers all ages and stages of life. The RoSPA Awards recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work. Through the RoSPA Awards scheme, which is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. The awards are now in its 62nd year.

Andrew Hopkins, Wales & West Utilities Director of Operations, said:

“We are very proud to have been recognised seven years in a row by RoSPA. The recognition demonstrates the importance we place on health and safety in all our operations across the business and the importance we place on the wellbeing of our colleagues.

“To have received commendation within the oil and gas sector makes us all proud and it’s down to the commitment and professionalism of everyone within the company that has enabled this achievement.

“Health and safety is a top priority for us and we’re always trying to find ways in which we can work to improve safety standards for customers and colleagues alike. We’re delighted that our work has been recognised by RoSPA.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, said:

“The RoSPA Awards are the most highly-respected in the health and safety arena, with almost 2,000 entrants every year, and allow organisations to prove excellence in the workplace, demonstrating a commitment to the wellbeing of not only employees but all those who interact with it.”
