Teignmouth to benefit from arrival of £50,000 gas pipe investment work (1)

Wales & West Utilities is set to start £50,000 of gas pipe investment work in the Orchard Gardens and Clampet Lane area of Teignmouth which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.

Starting on the 20^th February, the work will involve upgrading 200m of old metal pipes to new plastic ones. The company anticipates this work will be complete by Easter and will be carried out by Wales & West Utilities contract partner Morrison Utility Services.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council in planning the work to keep disruption to the local community and local road users to a minimum.

For ease the work has been split into three phases which involve road closures. Where road closures are in place a diversion route will be clearly signposted:

• Phase 1 involves upgrading the gas pipes on the junction of Orchard Gardens and Fore Street. This will start on 20 February and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties should take approximately 1 week. So the local community, road users and our colleagues are kept safe, road closures will be in place on Fore Street and Orchard Gardens.

• Phase 2 involves working on Orchard Gardens and Clampet Lane. This will start on 27 February should take two weeks. During this phase of work there will be road closures on Orchard Gardens and Clampet Lane.

• Phase 3 of our work involves working on the junction of Orchard Gardens and Wellington Street. This will start on 13 March should take approximately 1 week to complete. During this final phase of work there will be a road closure on Wellington Street with two way traffic lights on Orchard Gardens.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Devon & Cornwall, Jim Lee, is managing the work and said:

“We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“We’re very aware of the effect that our work can have on communities and commuters. We’re working closely with Devon County Council to agree the best way to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
