Wales & West Utilities is nearing the completion of its £2 million gas pipe investment scheme in Rhiwbina which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.
Since the work started in July 2016, the company has upgraded more than 14km of old metal gas pipes to new plastic ones and more than 1400 individual supply pipes to homes and businesses in the area have also been upgraded.
Work is now starting on the final phase of the scheme which involves working in the Heol Y Deri and Heol Y Felin areas of the village. Barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, this is likely to be completed by the end of May.
This section of work will be carried out in three phases which require traffic management:
- Phase 1 will involve upgrading the old metal gas pipes along Heol Y Deri outside the shops. So road users, pedestrians and our colleagues are safe while we work, Heol Y Deri, between Beulah Road and Lon Isa, will be closed from 27 January for approximately three weeks. A diversion route via Beulah Road and Thornhill Road will be clearly signposted and businesses will be open as usual and we will accommodate trade deliveries.
Temporary bus stops will be in place for the duration of this phase of work. More information can be found at www.cardiffbus.com.
- Phase 2 will involve work on Rhiwbina Hill, which will be closed between the mini roundabout on Pantmawr Road and Troed Y Rhiw during half term week, from 17 February 2018 to 23 February 2018. A diversion route will be clearly signposted.
- Phase 3 will involve upgrading more than 1.2km of old metal gas pipes on Blaen-y-coed, Llwyn Grug, Clos Hendre, Clos Brynderi, Heol-y-felin, Mur Gwyn and Rhos Llan. We will be working on those streets from January until May 2018.

“We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“We’re very aware of the affect that our work can have on communities and commuters and we’re working closely with Cardiff Council and local councilors to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
