Wales & West Utilities is to begin a scheme to upgrade over 60 metres of gas pipe in the Church Street area of St. Austell.
Starting on 3 September, the work is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area. It is anticipated it will take 5 weeks to complete.
Ahead of the scheme Wales & West Utilities has been working closely with Cornwall Council. To keep the local community, road users and colleagues safe whilst work is ongoing it has been agreed that a road closure will be in place on Church Street, from the junction of High Cross Street with South Street to Victoria Place between 17 September and 8 October. A diversion route will be clearly signposted, and a team will be on site to coordinate traffic and guide delivery vehicles.
Programme Controller Assistant Roxanne Whittaker is the project manager for this work and said:
“We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
“We’re very aware of the effect that our work can have on communities and commuters. We’re working closely with Cornwall Council to agree the best way to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
