Wales & West Utilities is set to start a £130,000 gas pipe investment scheme in Ruthin which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Starting on 8 January, the £130,000 investment work will involve upgrading 1km of old metal pipes to new plastic ones in the Well Street area of the town, and barring any unforeseen circumstances will take 12 weeks to complete.

Ahead of the scheme Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Denbighshire County Council to plan work and it has been agreed that the scheme will be split into three phases and traffic management will be in place to keep disruption to the local community and road users to a minimum.

  • Phase 1 will start on Well Street on 8 January and should take five weeks to complete. While work is ongoing, a rolling road closure on Well Street will be in place. Access will be maintained for residents throughout this phase and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
  • Phase 2 will start on 12 February on Market Street at the junction with St. Peters Square roundabout. The work will progress from St. Peters Roundabout to the Craft Centre Roundabout. So work can be carried out safely, a one-way system will be in place on Market Street with traffic permitted to flow southbound into Ruthin town centre only.
  • Phase 3 will start on Station Road on 19 March 2018 and should take around four weeks to complete. Multi-way traffic lights will be in place on Station Road during this period.

Wales & West Utilities Operations Controller, Paul Astley, is managing the work and said:

We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

We’re very aware of the affect that our work can have on communities and commuters. We’re working closely with Denbighshire County Council to agree the best way to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
